April Activities

The AVT/UTV season is about to kick off with the return of spring to the White Mountains.

First Membership Meeting– WMOTA’s first membership meeting will be Thursday, April 13th at the Show Low Café.  As usual, the meeting will be at 6:00 pm, but come early (about 5:00 pm) for dinner and socializing.

First Ride-The first ride will be Saturday, April 22nd at 09:30 am.  We know the normal ride date would be the third Saturday, April 16th, but that’s the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter and many may have holiday plans.  Postponing a week also gives spring more time to warm things up. Karen and Jerry Smith will be leading the ride.  It will be about 40 miles long.  Bring plenty to drink, lunch and clothing appropriate for the day.

Ride Directions-
From the intersection of Penrod and Porter Mountain Roads – Go east ≈8.2 miles to FS 182.  Turn right (south) on FS 182.  Go ≈2.2 miles to FS 7.  Turn left (east) on FS 7.  Go ≈ 0.3 miles.  Camp and ride are on the left.
From the intersection of 260 and Buck Springs Road – Go ≈0.5 miles east on Buck Springs Road and turn left (north) on Sky Hi Rd/FS 182.  Go ≈6.2 miles and turn right on FS 7.  The turn is about ≈2.9 past where the pavement ends.   Go ≈ 0.3 miles.  Camp and ride is on the left.

Camping-WMOTA has historically not camped in April, but some of our heartier members have April camped in the past and there is plenty of room to camp at the ride site.  FYI – the average daily low for April 22nd is 31° and the average daily high is 59° in Pinetop.   There is nothing specific planned, but you are welcome to camp if you desire.
There may be more details to follow, so watch your e-mail.

November Membership Meeting Minutes
Date 2016-11-10
Call to Order/Officer Roll Call: Jack Dyer – President, John Taylor – Vice President, Wendy Call – Secretary, Karen Smith – Treasurer, Judy Koski – Membership Director, Roger Held – Ride Committee Chairman, Dawn Brady – Social Director, Chuck Wood – Webmaster
Officer Reports:
President’s Report – Jack
• Need to repair things on trail road. The generator won’t brew coffee. Going to take generator and get it fixed (maybe) or replace depending on cost. There are some other minor repairs on the trail.
• We need a few people out to our house to clean out the trailer and make repairs. This is not for the whole membership.
• Getting club liability insurance. Deciding how to structure the policy. Getting a policy for about $750 a year. The policy should cover anyone who is acting on behalf of the club.
• April camp/ride (potentially camping). Some people want to camp in April. We can go to Big Lake and hope for no snow.
• Camp and rides that need volunteers. Still looking for help in April. Ride leader needed. Social function volunteer needed for coffee and donuts
• New officers – president has two year term. Good behavior does not matter. hehe. John Taylor volunteered to be new vice president, but has not been confirmed by board. He wants the club to get insurance. New secretary is Wendy Call. Hooray! Karen is still treasurer. Dawn is social chair. Roger is the ride guy. Chuck is still webmaster.
Treasurer’s Report – Karen
• $4,214 started the month
• Income of $145
• Expenses $91
• Board voted to transfer $1,000 into trailer replacement reserve – $4600 total
• $7,819.38 two accounts combined (savings and checking)
• In October we received an unsolicited check for work at the tour of the White Mountains $100 – (They really appreciated our work.)
Ride Committee Chairperson’s Report – Jane
• Nice ride in October – weenie roast with side dishes. Karen and Jeremy had a continental breakfast before ride.
We believe in the development and maintenance of both public and private lands for
responsible off-highway vehicle recreation and in ensuring access to public lands.
• Poker ride that everyone enjoyed. It didn’t rain. Made $5 on poker ride.
• Not doing a 50/50 tonight, because so few people.
• Toy drive for kids on the White Mountain.
• November ride – ride from the corrals at Pine Dale (out 260, turn North toward Taylor, then about 2 1/2 miles). We will put signs out. It’s an easy ride about 20 miles on the front end. Lunch in Taylor at Trappers then 20 miles back. Jack will send out an email to do the ride this Saturday and maybe the 19th if there is enough interest from the club. Leave at 10am. The ride is about 2 hours both ways. Someone will call Trappers to get reservations.
• Maintenance ride on Maverick Trail. Richard called but wasn’t able to talk to him. Our grant expired in September. It will be perpetual maintenance.
Agency Reports:
Game and Fish – Marc – nothing
Other Business:
• Doing a survey to get a handle on economic impact – how much money people spend. People saying they couldn’t get the survey to work.
• Judy Koski is the membership person. She is not here tonight. You can email or scan the form to her.
• An officer was shot. There is a GoFundMe account to help with funeral services. Also a raffle and t-shirts that you can buy online (White Mountain Ts). The service will be at the high school at 1pm on Monday.
• Stay in touch over the winter via email. Don’t hesitate to reach out.
• Possibly doing Chuck’s ride in February.
Adjournment 6:30 pm
